Foundation Year 2009/2010

 Description of the programme :

SIST - off campus centre for the University of Sunderland, has formulated a preparatory year for beginners in English, the Foundation year will allow students to build a solid foundation in the English language, through an intensive and accelerated training programme, in conjunction with the British Council, before integrating into the first year of  the Bachelors programme.

The main purpose of this program is to prepare students to enter our Bachelor’s curriculum.

Students are provided with the necessary skills to be an independent learner, within an English-speaking environment.

 Structure of Courses / Evaluation :

The academic year is composed of 3 terms covering a total of 30 weeks. All students must take a placement test (no charge) to ascertain their level of English.

During each term there will be continuous assessment and at the end of each term there will be an exam.

First Term:
Based mainly on the four skills of English: reading, writing, listening and conversation. These will give you the necessary level of English. Therefore, every student will be able to continue in the second half of the academic year.

Second Term:
During this term, the English classes will concentrate on study skills to improve your ability to take notes, give presentations, analytical and critical abilities, conferences. You will be equipped with necessary qualifications for the development of independent study skills.

Third Term:
In the final term you will be reviewing your past 2 terms and also having additional courses in Academic Writing skills ( to prepare you for your progression to the Bachelors course) and also PersonaL Development which will provide you with additional skills, such as, Managing Time, Organisational skills, etc..

 Content of the courses :

The weekly program includes class, individual contact and assignments. You will also have the opportunity to use the British Council’s equipment and resources for your studies.

 University staff :

For the English program, we work in conjunction with the British Council, which have a highly qualified and professional staff with considerable experience in teaching English as a foreign language.

For other modules of the program, we employ qualified teachers who provide high quality courses. Our teachers use modern methods and up to date materials. The staff is attentive to individual needs, by providing them with support at all levels.

 Equipment :

The Foundation Year program is offered in association with the British Council, a complete range of equipment that you will find particularly useful.
These include the following:
- Multimedia Center and study area.
- Equipment and materials , include Video and Audio CD-ROM. 
- Computers with software, networking.
Students will also be encouraged to become involved in the organisation of a range of activities and social excursions.
